ELLIPSIS

The bone wracking chilly air almost deterred her but she grit her teeth out of determination and let her feet slide out of the flip flops she had on, the sharp sand got in between her toes but her mind was made up and not even the slow drizzle that made her nose run could stop her. Because no matter how she thinks about it she came up with a simple yet painful conclusion that life without her would be better off for each member of her family, her mother most especially. Her mother. She scoffed as the tears poured in torrents almost blinding her. She could feel the cold water swirling around her ankles now. She moved deeper and realized that the water wasn’t so cold after all; maybe death wasn’t as terrifying as it had being made out to be.

Her jolly old grandparents’ thought almost jolted her out of her plan but she quickly did away with it and replaced it with her mother’s thought. The water was already up to her neck, she could feel herself loosing balance. Her joints felt numb and her feet were already raw from the brutal assault of the rocks that jolted out of the river’s bed. She ignored all these; it was like another being had possession of her will and was manipulating it. Even when the water closed over her head and she felt like fighting for oxygen she felt bound.

She began to gasp for air but in the process water filled her mouth and throat and she could feel that the end was near. Oh well, mum are you happy now?
Suddenly, she felt a vice like grip around her waist, she didn’t know whether to feel relieved or not but she managed to put up a useless struggle that only weakened her the more. Her assailant was not only strong but determined to drag her to shore.

Within minutes he had managed to pull her to the sandy shore, his rechargeable lamp piercing the thick darkness like a one eyed owl. She laid wheezing and coughing up water as he patted her back gently yet rhythmically until he was satisfied she was fine did he turn his attention to himself. He took off his sneakers and turned them upside down while he pointedly ignored her. She glared at his rock solid back; his long legs were folded in front of him as he tried to salvage the damage done to his footwear.

“Well aren’t you going to say something, oh mighty savior?” she hissed angrily.
If he was upset he didn’t show it, he just sat there trying to catch his breath then without sparing her a glance said calmly, “Next time you have a death wish the Meme river will serve your purpose, this is only a small river and you would be rescued easily,”
The nerve. Her mind reeled and she managed to push herself to a sitting position, she would not bow to the cold and the numb feeling that was overwhelming her at the moment, most importantly before this aggravating stranger.

“If you see me tomorrow pretend we never met,” she was already on her shaky feet, the soles felt painful and her shoes were nowhere to be found. She winced as she made for the low hanging branches that framed the bush path that led away from the river’s shore onto the tarred street. It was still drizzling and the darkness looked impenetrable, until that single lamp pierced the path before her. She turned sharply the anger in her eyes, she could do without his help and she wasted no time in telling him so.

He scoffed and looked down at her, even in the darkness his eyes pinned her to the spot, the rest of his features were lost in the night but those eyes still stood out, this frightened her a great deal but she pushed her chin up and held his gaze.

“I will take you home and see to it that you don’t pull off such a stunt again, at least not tonight,”
“Stay away from me,” her voice carried her disgust.

He shook his head instead and said almost mockingly, ”Sweetie you have no shoes on, you won’t make it home with your teeth chattering like that, you don’t have to worry about me knowing your home I will silently accompany you most of the way and tomorrow you won’t have to bother about me knowing you,”

“Bug off!” she gasped. With every effort she made she felt like she was going to pass out, but she hadn’t come this far in life falling to the point of a damsel in distress waiting for her knight in shining armor, so she pushed on but was shocked out of her senses when she was gathered into strong warm arms, she groaned and slipped into oblivion feeling strangely safe.

She woke up the next few hours burrowed in her warm quilt and enveloped in a strong minty smell that made her drowsy. But no sign of her strange acquaintance anywhere, she was relieved.
“Happy birthday Jaffa,” Granny’s sad voice whispered over her closed eyes.
And she groaned.
